The situation
Following Russia’s full-scale invasion, the emergence of a large number of temporarily displaced persons has led to serious inequalities in terms of access to education. Indeed, hundreds of thousands of children had no other choice but to attend class online. Unfortunately, many of the displaced had to leave their homes on a moment’s notice and did not bring their electronic devices with them. Now, they don’t have the financial means to buy new devices so that they can join in the online learning being offered.
What we did
In cooperation with local partners in the city of Dnipro, our NGO decided to purchase used electronic devices, repair them, and make them available to the most vulnerable families in the regions of Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, and Kharkiv. We have also repaired abandoned school buildings in villages to make them suitable for receiving temporarily displaced children. This project is long-term and includes setting up progressive education programs in collaboration with teachers from different national backgrounds to complement the online courses offered by the Ukrainian government.
The result
We have now entered into a partnership with a company that has agreed to repair computer tablets free of charge with the ability to repair 300 per month. To date, we have distributed 150 tablets to children in need. What’s more, we have identified a school in need of renovation, a construction company that can do the job, and a financial partner ready to help with acquiring the material needed to do it. This project is particularly close to our hearts and we hope to be able to bring it to fruition sometime during 2024.
